Oceus Introduces Expanded Xiphos® Family

Scalable Family of 4G LTE Communications Solutions Gives Warfighters and First Responders Edge on Battlefield and Beyond

RESTON, Va. – September 7, 2016 – Oceus, Inc., the market leader in delivering agile and innovative mobile solutions, announced today that it has expanded its award-winning Xiphos® family of mobile 4G LTE solutions to include Xiphos® Micro, Xiphos® Mid and Xiphos® Macro, each providing the ideal size, weight and power for specific deployment scenarios. Xiphos Micro is a man-portable, lightweight system that provides unmatched coverage to on-the-move teams, while Macro platforms offer scalable solutions for larger deployments; the Mid-tier platform supports both large and on-the-move deployments.

“We understand that every deployment scenario is unique and have expanded our groundbreaking yet proven Xiphos family of solutions to deliver the mobility, flexibility and scalability today’s warfighters and first responders require in tactical environments,” said Randy Fuerst, President and CEO of Oceus. “The power of this family of solutions is that they are interoperable across the family with the same user interface.”

Xiphos, the company’s core tactical cellular solution, is a 4G LTE communications solution that is portable and rapidly deployable on various platforms, including land-based tactical vehicles, unmanned aircraft, and ships or where communications infrastructure is inadequate, damaged or non-existent.

Xiphos Micro is a small form-factor 4G LTE self-contained network, optimized for tactical, on-the-move operations. It provides mobile broadband to enable high-speed voice, video and data communications to facilitate complex operations and address the immediate communication and data requirement of mobile field personnel. Engineered for reduced size, weight and power (SWAP) consumption, Xiphos Micro is rugged, with military grade (MIL-STD-810G) compliance construction, coupled with the latest technology and security features.

The Xiphos Mid module is a tactical, compact mid-tier 4G LTE RF Macro system designed within a single enclosure and is ideal for vehicular deployments. Also optimized for low SWAP consumption, Xiphos Mid contains a Macro Radio Unit and is designed specifically for on-the-move missions. Xiphos Mid has also been deployed on Unmanned Aerial Systems.

The most powerful and flexible member of the Xiphos family, Xiphos Macro, is optimized for larger scale deployments and can operate in a stand-alone or networked environment. It is highly scalable and provides high data throughput, operating as a compact system to a small group of users in a defined coverage area, or a high capacity configuration that services a large number of users within a wide coverage area. Xiphos Macro delivers superior RF output power and range, providing 5-7 miles of range in a typical tactical environment and over 50 miles of range for airborne deployments with a clear line of sight.

All three solutions can be deployed in a Network of Xiphos (NOX) configuration, allowing users to move between coverage areas while maintaining an established session. The Oceus patented Advanced Network of Xiphos (ANOX) technology detects and establishes connectivity between units, synchronizes key elements and contains algorithms that adjust various elements in real-time to provide the best connectivity to end-users.

Oceus Granted Five Patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Patents Granted for Tactical Cellular ‘On-the-Move’ Designed for Military, Public Safety and other Tactical Environments

RESTON, Va. – March 10, 2016 – Oceus, Inc., the market leader in delivering agile and innovative mobile solutions, announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) granted five patents to the company for its groundbreaking technology that controls and enhances the use of mobile tactical cellular technology.

The five patents are based on Xiphos, the company’s core tactical cellular solution, and include its mission management and network control software as well as the situational awareness features that make Xiphos excel in tactical environments. Xiphos is a 4G LTE communications solution that is portable and rapidly deployable on various platforms including land-based tactical vehicles, unmanned aircraft and U.S. Naval vessels.

“In a traditional cellular network, the only element of the network that moves is the end user equipment, the mobile phones,” said Kevin Stiles, Chief Technology Officer for Oceus. “Ever-evolving technology and tactical network architectures introduce very unique networks. One such network is the ‘mobile mobile-network,’ in which every element of the network can move and come in and out of the network in real-time. These moving elements include the Radio Access Networks (RAN), Core Networks (CN), Backhaul, services and mobile phones. This is a much more complex environment than what most of us think of as a ‘mobile network,’ where only the end user equipment is mobile. Oceus developed and patented a complete product portfolio designed to support deploying and running this dynamic communication network made up of Oceus products; Xiphos, ONmission and our solution for this ‘mobile mobile-network,’ Advanced Network of Xiphos (ANOX).”

ANOX enables a network of Xiphos to work together. It detects connectivity between units, synchronizes key elements and contains algorithms that adjust various elements in real-time to provide the best connectivity to the end-user. Although an individual Xiphos provides a ‘bubble’ of cellular coverage, when a larger coverage area is needed, tactical users can communicate from bubble-to-bubble, using backhaul as the connectivity between bubbles. That backhaul can be accomplished using various technologies like satellite, microwave or Ethernet connections.  A patent supporting ANOX provides the automatic selection of ‘best backhaul available’ to optimize this connectivity by using multiple links, of various technologies, to link the users and ensure cellular connectivity.

In addition to the Xiphos network, ONmission, the tool that Oceus developed specifically to manage this ‘mobile mobile-network’ also received a patent. ONmission supports the planning, provisioning, managing and troubleshooting of the end-to-end mission, from the mobile phone, the RAN, CN, Backhaul and services. One of the new patents is based on the core of ONmission and how multiple mobile cellular networks can be networked together.

“These patents are core to the differentiation Oceus is achieving in the tactical cellular environment,” said Randy Fuerst, President and CEO of Oceus. “We have delivered these solutions to the Department of Defense and to First Responders, and it is this ability to operate in a ‘mobile mobile-network’ that is the most challenging for our customers. I am proud of the patents granted to our engineering team – but more importantly, for the contributions these technologies are providing to enhance our customers’ ability to achieve their missions.”

Oceus has two more patents pending; all three patents extend and deepen the control and flexibility of its family of tactical cellular systems.

Oceus Enables Secure, Mobile Communications for the Papal Visit with JerseyNet

Mobile Assets Provide Secure Inter-Agency Communications and Situational Awareness Over Dedicated First Responder Network

PHILADELPHIA – September 29, 2015 – Oceus, Inc., the market leader in delivering agile and innovative mobile solutions, announced today that its JerseyNet solution successfully supported the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia. The solution was deployed by the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness and the New Jersey State Police to enable secure communications and live streaming security video during the historic visit by Pope Francis for the World Meeting of Families. JerseyNet provides a dedicated, mobile 4G LTE broadband network to share voice, video and data between first responders. Because this is a private network – not shared with the general public – there is low risk of congestion and the performance limitations that commercial networks might experience during large public events such as this, where more than 1 million people gathered to participate.

“Oceus was pleased to play a role in ensuring the success of the Papal visit by enabling live streaming security video and direct communications throughout the public safety community. This dedicated interoperable solution connected multiple agencies in Band 14 spectrum in ways that would have not been possible over commercial networks due to the size of the local crowds,” said Randy Fuerst, president and chief executive officer for Oceus.

Oceus integrated the solution that bridged existing Land Mobile Radio (LMR) push-to-talk networks with the LTE network to deliver a much more complete picture over the entire event for public safety. The infrastructure consisted of four (4) Oceus Systems on Wheels (SOWs), MobilePro cameras, Hughes satellite (for backup network connectivity), and Mutualink as the main interoperable communication application connected to Sonim XP7 ultra-rugged Android smartphones. The Oceus SOWs, which included two (2) deployable trailers with 60 foot high masts, an SUV and a van, established the mobile LTE responder network for the event. They were positioned to ensure public safety communications and connect Pennsylvania State Police, Camden County Public Safety, New Jersey State Police, Philadelphia Police Department, NJ Transit, the NJ Regional Operations Intelligence Center (ROIC), and other participating State and Federal partners. The entire system was linked together by Fujitsu’s GX 4000 E-Band radio and supported by PMC Associates.

The event demonstrated the flexibility of this network approach, connecting temporary deployed network sites and rapidly moveable assets in Philadelphia to fixed network sites in New Jersey to deliver a new capability to first responders. Oceus, PMC Associates and Fujitsu Network Communications were awarded the NJ State contract to build JerseyNet – the first all deployable network in the country sponsored by FirstNet. JerseyNet provides dedicated broadband service for responders in three (3) regional LTE rings in Passaic County (Paterson), Atlantic City and Camden, NJ.  The mobile nature of these network nodes, under the direction of Fred Scalera, Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, enabled New Jersey to assist with the Papal visit by deploying four (4) of its reserve systems connected to JerseyNet. Guaranteed broadband access to public safety teams for large scale events and disasters is ground-breaking. The increased capabilities provided by JerseyNet demonstrated the value of dedicated broadband solutions and the promise that FirstNet holds for all first responders.
