Oceus Moderates Panel of DOD Leaders Discussing Key Technologies Shaping the Future of Network Operations

As a leader in private 5G solutions, Oceus sponsored the Potomac Officers Club’s 10th Annual Defense R&D Summit on January 31, 2024. Kevin Stiles, Oceus CTO, moderated a panel of DOD leaders, including LTC Tim Lawrence, Lt Col Benjamin Pimentel, Juan Ramirez, and Dr. Martin Weiss, who discussed the future of intelligent network operations.

According to the speakers, the digital revolution has made military operations more reliant on networks than ever before, and the Department of Defense is laser-focused on 5G, Future G and new technologies that can maximize the benefits modern networks have to offer.

According to Dr. Martin Weiss, director for Future G applied research and technical lead for resilient and open commercial solutions within the DOD’s Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, optimality is a primary concern for the department in using networks.

This focus stems from the need to ensure that networks can support forces at the tactical edge, or remote environments with limited connectivity, that have different requirements than other organizations using networks.

US Military Officials Prioritize Speed & Partnerships in Getting 5G Tech to Warfighters

5G technology is helping the U.S. government to modernize its communications and network capabilities, especially in military applications. But because so many government and military operations, weapons systems and communications rely on network connectivity today, 5G is no longer just an option, but a necessity, experts argue.

“From my perspective, network performance is a graded event,” said Col. Jason Quinter, assistant chief of staff, G-6, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing for the U.S. Marine Corps, during the Potomac Officers Club’s 5G Forum. “We’re not just provisioning networks for the fun of it. What those networks are able to do to close kill chains is a graded event for warfighters,” he explained.

Since its global deployment in 2019, the fifth generation of mobile networks, or 5G, has boasted lower latency, higher bandwidth and faster connectivity than its predecessors. Col. Quinter asserted that these benefits are imperative in the U.S. military’s pursuit of national security missions, advanced technology integration and other paramount initiatives.

WashingtonExec Highlights Oceus’ History and Future Providing Broadband Wireless Solutions

The below is an excerpt from an article on WashingtonExec featuring an interview with Oceus’ Paul McQuillan. Read the full article here >

Amid the ever-rising tide of data, federal agencies need “an advanced network solution with major bandwidth — and it needs to be persistent, reliable, secure and mobility enabled,” said Paul McQuillan. And with 5G networking, they can meet that need.

As chief growth and strategy officer with Oceus, McQuillan sees legacy networks falling short.

“Some of the existing communications infrastructures, including Wi-Fi networks, simply cannot scale,” he said. “Legacy wireless networks weren’t really built to integrate that security, to support the device density, to address the needs of automation.”

While 5G can close the gap, getting there isn’t as simple as just throwing a switch.

Federal chief information officers, chief technology officers and chief information security officers will need to chart a path forward in order to migrate from legacy wireless systems to a 5G-enabled future. Oceus can help.

“For over 30 years, Oceus has been providing broadband wireless solutions for government and commercial,” McQuillan said. “We’ve deployed over 150 cellular systems in the government, for various use cases.”

The company’s expertise in this area runs deep. It has designed its own wireless systems, and it partners with wireless original equipment manufacturers and compute providers. Oceus is also a Commercial Solution for Classified integrator on national security use cases.

The company is making headway on its efforts to deploy 5G in support of the federal mission.

Through the Defense Department’s Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, the company is under multiple contracts providing operational 5G networks, McQuillan said…
